How to Survive the Next Set of Google Updates: Ride the Panda Penguin Wave

Many companies are worried about adjusting their online marketing strategies to survive the next Google Update. Website administrators that ignore the updates could see their rankings start to fall, and traffic numbers decrease. The latest Google algorithms coming to users through major updates (i.e. Panda and Penguin) are not something to be ignored.

Genius Monkey’s advice? Stay focused and keep it simple. Know who you are working with on your search engine optimization (SEO) and don’t be encouraged to cheat the system. Don’t be tricked into procedures that provide fast results, it won’t be an effective, long-term online marketing plan. Google will always have one more update that will put a stop to any short cut or cheat system being used to generate unwarranted search engine results.

The newest Penguin Wave (including the next Google Update) is coming soon. According to Matt Cutts, Google software engineer and head of Google’s Webspam team, “[…] the engineers are incorporating new signals and iterating to improve the algorithm…[users can] expect that the next few Penguin updates will take longer, incorporate additional signals, and as a result will have more noticeable impact. Certainly links are a primary area to monitor…”

Cutts, and others like him, kindly offer us the basic guidance and information required to prepare for upcoming changes to what could, in all honesty, make or break any online marketing plan. To make sure that your website stays afloat and as visible as possible throughout the next huge update, refocus on the basics. Content is king, on and offsite. Strengthen your website content and offer good content offsite.

Where should you be spending your time and energy? Keep it simple by focusing on what we like to call the Big 3:

1.    Social Media
2.    Offsite Activity Like Google Places (now G+Local) and Link Quality Management
3.    Video Marketing

Depend upon the fact that social media outlets are going to stay strong. Users are not going to suddenly abandon their favorite online hangouts. That means that your marketing strategies employing Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. should continue to receive your love and attention.

Google is a controlling force on the Internet and utilizing their tools can only help any online marketing campaign. There are many Google products that are aimed at promoting local businesses and establishing trust/authority (which always helps increase website ranking).

The importance of video marketing is obvious when you consider the fact that videos are given top positioning in search results pages. No one can argue that the top spot isn’t the best place to be, so savvy online marketers will get started with video marketing campaigns if they haven’t done so already.

Keeping your online marketing campaign simple and focused and putting in the time and effort to keep things running smoothly means you don’t have to be scared of upcoming Google updates. You’ll survive because your marketing campaign is based on a solid foundation. Think of the Google updates as a reminder to stay on your toes and keep moving.

Google may be hated by many, but it’s only because they are large and in charge. Don’t waste your SEO marketing efforts trying to get around Google. Any true expert will tell you that your time is much better spent getting “in” with Google to increase your online exposure.
